We begin with your history, symptoms, and a focused movement and orthopedic examination.

Scan the area
A small amount of gel is applied and a handheld probe is moved over the area. Most focused visits take about 15 minutes.

When useful, we can watch the tissue as you move—something a still image cannot show in the same way.

We review what was observed and explain whether conservative care, follow-up imaging, or referral makes sense.

Does an ultrasound evaluation hurt?
The scan is noninvasive and typically painless. You may feel light pressure from the probe, and moving an already-irritated area may reproduce your symptoms.
How should I prepare?
Usually, no special preparation is needed. Wear loose clothing that allows easy access to the area and bring any relevant imaging reports you already have.
Is ultrasound the same as an X-ray or MRI?
No. Ultrasound is especially useful for many superficial muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, joints, and fluid collections. X-ray is better for many bone concerns, while MRI may be needed for deep structures or a more comprehensive view.
Will I receive a diagnosis?
Your visit combines the scan with your history and clinical examination. We will explain findings within the scope of the evaluation. Ultrasound cannot identify or exclude every condition, and a radiology study or specialist referral may still be recommended.
Do you bill insurance?
No. This is a cash-pay service, so the fee is clear before the visit and no claim is filed. A receipt is available upon request. HSA/FSA reimbursement depends on your plan.
What happens if you find a significant problem?
If the evaluation raises concern for a significant tear or other pathology requiring further assessment, we will recommend referral to an appropriate orthopedic provider.
Will I receive a report?
Yes. After Dr. Clarke Kauffman reviews the ultrasound images, you will receive a written report summarizing the findings and recommended next steps.
When should I seek urgent care instead?
This is not emergency care. Seek urgent evaluation for severe trauma, obvious deformity, loss of circulation or sensation, rapidly worsening swelling, fever with a hot or red joint, or other potentially serious symptoms.
